DIY Windshield Repair Kit: Quick Fix for Cracked Glass
This guide helps you use a windshield repair kit to fix minor chips, cracks, and scratches on your car’s windshield.
Important Note:
- This method is suitable for small cracks and chips, not large cracks or those exceeding 1 inch in length.
- For deeper cracks, complex fractures, or cracks in your driver’s direct line of sight, consult a professional for proper repair or replacement.
Materials:
- Windshield repair kit (including resin, injector, curing strip, razor blade)
- Microfiber cloth
- Isopropyl alcohol ( rubbing alcohol)
- Clear tape (optional)
Instructions:
- Clean the area: Thoroughly clean the damaged area with a microfiber cloth and rubbing alcohol. Remove any dirt, debris, or moisture to ensure a good bond.
- Prepare the resin: If the kit requires mixing the resin components, follow the instructions carefully.
- Secure the injector: Place the injector base over the crack, ensuring a tight seal. Use the suction cups or follow the specific instructions for your kit to secure it in place.
- Inject the resin: Slowly inject the resin into the crack using the injector plunger. Follow the kit’s instructions on the amount and injection rate.
- Apply curing pressure: Once filled, apply additional pressure using the injector screw or following the specific method for your kit. This helps push the resin deeper into the crack.
- Curing the resin: Most kits require UV light exposure for curing. Park your car in direct sunlight for the recommended curing time (usually 15-30 minutes). Alternatively, some kits use a curing lamp included in the kit.
- Remove the injector: Once cured, carefully remove the injector according to the kit’s instructions.
- Scrape off excess resin: Use the provided razor blade to gently scrape away any excess resin on the windshield surface, holding the blade at a 90-degree angle.
- Final touches: Apply a small piece of clear tape (optional) around the repaired area to prevent further contamination or dust buildup while the resin fully cures. Remove the tape after a few hours.

Additional Tips:
- Work in a clean, dust-free environment for better results.
- If the crack doesn’t fill completely, repeat steps 4-6 as needed.
- Be careful not to overfill the crack, as excess resin can be difficult to remove.
- If the damage is extensive or you’re unsure about the process, consult a professional for proper repair.
By following these steps, you can use a windshield repair kit to effectively fix minor cracks and chips in your car’s windshield, potentially saving time and money compared to professional repair or replacement.
